How the gold value is calculated

Work out what your gold is worth from the live international spot price — by weight and karat, in your local currency.

1

The 24K per-gram price is derived from the live gold spot price (USD per troy ounce, ÷ 31.1035 g) and today’s exchange rate.

2

Karat sets the purity: 24K is pure gold, 22K is 91.6%, 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%. Your value = 24K price × purity × weight.

3

You can override the 24K price to match your local jeweller — handy where prices include a premium.

Spot-based estimate only. Shops add making charges and a margin, and buy-back prices are lower. Live rates may be delayed.

Frequently asked questions

How is the price of gold per gram calculated?

The international spot price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). We divide by 31.1035 to get the 24K per-gram price in USD, convert to your currency at today’s rate, then multiply by karat purity and weight.

What is the difference between 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K?

Karat is the purity: 24K is pure gold, 22K is 91.6%, 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%. The lower the karat, the less pure gold it contains, so the lower the value per gram.

Why is the jeweller’s price higher than this?

Shops add making (workmanship) charges and a retail margin on top of the spot price, and their buy-back price is usually lower. This calculator shows the raw metal value — you can override the 24K price to match your local rate.

Are the gold prices live?

Yes, the tool pulls the live spot price and exchange rate in your browser. Rates can be slightly delayed, so confirm with your dealer before a transaction.
