How zakat is calculated
Zakat is an annual charity of 2.5% on the qualifying wealth you have held for one lunar year, once it reaches the nisab threshold.
Zakat is due once your net zakatable wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for one full lunar year (hawl).
Zakatable wealth includes cash, bank balances, gold, silver, business inventory and money you reasonably expect to recover — minus immediate debts.
The nisab is the value of 85g of gold or 595g of silver. Most scholars favour the silver nisab as it benefits more recipients.
The rate is 2.5% (1/40) of the net total once the nisab is met; below it, no zakat is due.
This is a simplified estimate for guidance only. Rulings vary between scholars — for your specific situation, consult a qualified scholar or your local zakat authority.
